Communicating effectively during a crisis

This winter has brought extreme weather conditions which have seen record snowfall throughout the country.  Local authorities have either had to suspend or amend waste and recycling collections as severe weather warnings were issued by the Met Office for the majority of the UK. Such delays in rubbish collections can lead to frustrated residents and therefore communicating effectively during the crisis is critical.

It is crucial to keep residents informed about possible changes to the schedule through existing media channels such as the council website, local newspapers and helplines or call centres. The key in a crisis is to keep the message consistent. Keeping residents informed will counteract negative coverage, and ensure any commentary is well informed.

After assuring residents that there will be an altered collection schedule, details should be posted on the website and in the local paper.  It is important to post regular updates as well to avoid further frustration.

Weather forecasts are predicting more snow and ice over the coming weeks which could lead to further disruption of services. Local authorities have to develop, implement and continuously improve their crisis communication strategy. It is important to make the most of the lessons learnt so far and avoid past failures, assign responsibilities and thoroughly train the designated employees. If necessary, contact communications experts to step in to offer advice or media training to relevant staff members.
