Five New Year’s resolutions for a greener 2010

According to the Energy Savings Trust, almost half of the UK’s carbon emissions come from the energy that we use every day, at home and when we travel. In order to live a more sustainable and eco friendly life, we need to change our habits – and what better place to start than with some green New Year’s resolutions.

This year, Sauce Consultancy is challenging people to do something different for 2010, and make at least one green pledge to benefit the environment. To help, we have come up with our top five green resolutions:

  1. Make your home energy efficient by taking advantage of the boiler scrappage scheme and insulating the loft.
  2. Don’t use the car, get fit and cut car pollution. Leave the car at home one day a week and walk or cycle to and from work. If it’s too far to walk, even the bus, train or a car-share are great green options.
  3. Buy local food which hasn’t been flown half way around the world. One third of all household carbon emissions in the UK come from food miles, so keep it local. It is fresher and arguably tastier too.
  4. Play your part in reducing the billions of bags thrown away each year and swap plastic shopping bags in favour of reusable options.
  5. REDUCE, REUSE & RECYCLE. New Year usually means out with the old and in with the new – but don’t be so hasty. Help stop the planet going to waste by recycling and reusing what you already have. Moreover, try to reduce your food waste. Food going to landfill means lots more polluting ‘greenhouse gases’ in the atmosphere.
