To tweet or not to tweet….that is the social question

One of the hottest topics on the Sauce Communications Hub at RWM, in partnership with CIWM, was Twitter. What is it? How can you use it to target the right messages at the right people at the right time? Is it worth it?

So here is the Sauce Guide to Twitter, in replies of 140 characters or less of course.

What is Twitter?

Twitter is a social network. Individuals, organisations and businesses register and use it to put their thoughts out there.

Twitter is instant and is a great way of following those you are interested in: what they are doing, what they are thinking, where they are, what they are selling.

What do the experts think?

We asked a couple of well known communications personalities “are you a twit for not tweeting?”

Joy Blizzard thinks it is part of the mix but cannot be relied on to reach everyone.

Ex BBC Journalist and Sauce Associate Steve Bustin (@steveinbrighton) believes that, used effectively, Twitter is a great tool for all public and private sector organisations.

Sauce’s own John Twitchen (@JohnTwitchen) loves it but believes that communications should be based around a clear message to an identified audience. (more…)

Communications Hub gets people talking at RWM

If you were at RWM in partnership with CIWM, you couldn’t have failed to notice our Communications Hub, one of the liveliest features at the show.

With a host of industry experts and opinion formers delivering a range of interactive talks and sessions each day, we really got the industry talking about the likely impacts of the Localism Bill and how its introduction will change the way our industry communicates.

Our daily debates tackled the policy issues head on; leading journalists were on hand to share their ideas on how to build relationships and drive coverage, while social media practitioners busted many of the myths surrounding social media and made it much more accessible for us all.

Over the coming weeks we will be sharing with you some of the opinions and views expressed on the Hub. We’ll be asking you what you think, so watch this space for more invaluable knowledge and a chance to have your say!

Are you a twit for not tweeting?
According to Joy Blizzard, the answer is “no, you are simply recognising how your residents like to receive information.” Sauce’s very own media expert, Steve Bustin was joined by Joy for a lively debate ‘to tweet or not to tweet?’ With Steve proclaiming that, used effectively, Twitter is a great tool for all public and private sector organisations, Joy urged caution by arguing that communications should be based around resident needs and not a drive to tweet for tweeting’s sake. Happy New Year!

We hope that everyone had a restful and restorative Christmas break and is prepared for the challenges 2011 has to offer. This year promises to be another busy and rewarding year for Sauce Consultancy which will see the company past its five year point and continuing to build on the strengths of the previous year. The company has shown strong growth year on year, in line with that seen by the environmental services sector. Sauce’s strength is in the depth of knowledge it is able to bring to clients, in particular smaller firms that have expanded into multi-million pound operations relatively quickly, and new market entrants attracted by strong legislative and financial drivers. Communications Hub a loud Success at Futuresource

The Futuresource 2010 Communications Hub, run by Sauce Consultancy in partnership with Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM) and the Associate Parliamentary Sustainable Resource Group (APSRG), was a resounding success again this year, with a series of hard hitting debates around key communications challenges facing the industry.

Panel Debates put the ‘Communication’ in ‘Communications Hub’

With a strong line-up of industry insiders, journalists and politicians, the debate sessions tackled a wide range of topics from public engagement to bad science and building ties with protest groups.

The result was truly exciting and dynamic exchanges with robust participation from the audience which provided the opportunity to go behind the press releases and newspaper articles and hear what the experts really think of the issues facing the sector. It proved that informed discussion and engagement with the public are the building blocks for the future of the environment sector. (more…)
