Survey shows Brits love their bins

Thursday, December 1st, 2011

People aren’t worried about how often their bin is collected; it’s how good the service is that really matters. An independent survey by Icaro Consulting and Sauce Consultancy shows that 78% of the Great British Public are happy with their bin services, weekly or otherwise.

The survey ‘Attitudes to Waste and Recycling in Great Britain 2011’ by Icaro Consulting and Sauce Consultancy, highlighted some interesting statistics. For instance, with the debate still apparently raging over weekly v. fortnightly residual waste collections, the survey found no link between serious problems with waste collections and collection frequency.

Regarding ‘slop buckets’, the survey showed that 79% of people with food waste collections were satisfied with their service. Satisfaction is notably higher where residents receive weekly food waste collections, showing that as long as the ‘smelly bit’ is dealt with effectively and efficiently, there are no significant issues with flies, smells or vermin. John Twitchen comments on the Chancellor’s Autumn Statement

Wednesday, November 30th, 2011

Sauce MD, John Twitchen, was featured in Wednesday’s Independent (30/11/2011, p 10-11), commenting on the Chancellor’s Autumn Statement from his perspective as an SME owner. Below is an expanded version of his views, with an eye on supporting the company’s continued growth.

Clearly the British economy is facing a difficult time, with a host of macro-economic issues burdening the government, the majority of which none of us are involved in nor could hope to influence. In some ways the level of detail the Chancellor went into was astounding (listing specific roads to be resurfaced!); nonetheless, it’s obvious that such a turbulent period in our economic history requires the macro-issues to be prioritised. Sauce visits Colnbrook Waste Management Site

Tuesday, November 29th, 2011

Grundon waste management site at ColnbrookIn November, Sauce-rers Hannah Arnett and Alice Hands visited the Grundon waste management site at Colnbrook, close to Heathrow Airport. The site visit was organised by the CIWM and the visit allowed participants to tour the facilities and discover more about the operation of the different plants, including an energy from waste plant (EfW), a clinical waste plant and a materials recovery facility (MRF).

The Grundon site has long been associated with the waste sector but in 2003 Grundon established a joint venture company with Viridor, to create Lakeside Energy from Waste Ltd and to build the state of the art EfW facility alongside its other facilities. The plant was officially opened by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh in October 2010 and it has already won a Letsrecycle Award for Excellence for ‘Innovation in Design of a Waste Management Facility’. The plant is currently exporting electricity to the national grid whilst keeping some back to power the plant itself. At the moment no heat is being exported, however this may alter in the future with the possibility of exporting heat to Heathrow.

One of the most fascinating aspects of the site visit was watching the sorting of waste in the MRF, a complex process which involves the use of both manual labour (hand pickers) and machines. It was also interesting to note that the site was extremely clean and there was no smell of rubbish at any point on the tour.

Although located in an industrial setting, the building is designed in a way to reduce the visual impact on the surrounding area via its curved roof (which also apparently helps with easing turbulence for the planes in and out of Heathrow!) and its ‘curling tong’ stack (see image).

The visitors centre, situated on a small lake with access via a bridge, is very impressive and it is here that Grundon gives an introductory talk about their facilities – and even provide much welcomed refreshments!

Overall, the site visit gave a great insight into the clever technology and advanced techniques used in modern waste management.

To tweet or not to tweet….that is the social question

One of the hottest topics on the Sauce Communications Hub at RWM, in partnership with CIWM, was Twitter. What is it? How can you use it to target the right messages at the right people at the right time? Is it worth it?

So here is the Sauce Guide to Twitter, in replies of 140 characters or less of course.

What is Twitter?

Twitter is a social network. Individuals, organisations and businesses register and use it to put their thoughts out there.

Twitter is instant and is a great way of following those you are interested in: what they are doing, what they are thinking, where they are, what they are selling.

What do the experts think?

We asked a couple of well known communications personalities “are you a twit for not tweeting?”

Joy Blizzard thinks it is part of the mix but cannot be relied on to reach everyone.

Ex BBC Journalist and Sauce Associate Steve Bustin (@steveinbrighton) believes that, used effectively, Twitter is a great tool for all public and private sector organisations.

Sauce’s own John Twitchen (@JohnTwitchen) loves it but believes that communications should be based around a clear message to an identified audience. (more…)

Communications Hub gets people talking at RWM

If you were at RWM in partnership with CIWM, you couldn’t have failed to notice our Communications Hub, one of the liveliest features at the show.

With a host of industry experts and opinion formers delivering a range of interactive talks and sessions each day, we really got the industry talking about the likely impacts of the Localism Bill and how its introduction will change the way our industry communicates.

Our daily debates tackled the policy issues head on; leading journalists were on hand to share their ideas on how to build relationships and drive coverage, while social media practitioners busted many of the myths surrounding social media and made it much more accessible for us all.

Over the coming weeks we will be sharing with you some of the opinions and views expressed on the Hub. We’ll be asking you what you think, so watch this space for more invaluable knowledge and a chance to have your say!

Are you a twit for not tweeting?
According to Joy Blizzard, the answer is “no, you are simply recognising how your residents like to receive information.” Sauce’s very own media expert, Steve Bustin was joined by Joy for a lively debate ‘to tweet or not to tweet?’ With Steve proclaiming that, used effectively, Twitter is a great tool for all public and private sector organisations, Joy urged caution by arguing that communications should be based around resident needs and not a drive to tweet for tweeting’s sake.
